The most perfect historical analogy to the Egyptian situation is the Coup in Chile in 1973. Like Allende in Chile, Morsi was an elected leader of a movement that sought social transformation. Allende and Morsi were both attacked by their critics as being the spear head of a movement that would lead to a totalitarian regime based on their ideology. Both of them trusted the established military and did not form popular militias to defend their governments. Both ended up being overthrown by Generals who lead Armies that were armed by the United States.
