The most refreshingly honest but intellectually inconsistent part - TopicsExpress

The most refreshingly honest but intellectually inconsistent part of the interview came at the end. Dawkins: So its faith and you cant question faith? Coyne: Thats right, I cannot. Its too deep inside me. Loved the conversation and how articulate the priest was. The most compelling aspect was that he was not the least bit afraid to admit his personal conflict between his scientific paradigm of the world and the sentimental provenance of his faith. But if you cannot question faith, then that ultimately renders truth subjective to the individual who perceives that particular type of faith. Ergo: My truth may not the same as your truth — which is essentially what Pope Francis alludes to when he said that atheists sin when they dont follow their personal conscience. The idea of objective truth that is accessible to reason has been the foundation of all foundations for the legitimacy of institutional Catholicisms magisterial authority. Catholics are in for an interesting time.
