The movie 12 Years a Slave has been banned for the most part in the south..Since, I retired in the south and have roots both in the north and south, I am always open and curious about the history of the south..particularly. I was disappointed, we were not able initially to see that movie. I have read books on the subject but love the animation of stories and the different dimension, the realism. We found an independent theater on a nearby island. It was a charming and different theater experience. You can buy lemoncellos with your JuJubees..Its a cafe, bar with movie theaters that have, the discards of peoples various living rooms, all uncoordinated and different. Their idea for handicapped is entering through the EXIT, nonetheless, we persevered through the culture shock and saw that movie. It was a charming place in an odd sort of way. I was taken aback by the sheer brutality and inhumanity. As I watched, the graphic tale unfold, their was one dimension, I had never realized before, it was the affect on white southerners of inflicting that level of suffering on helpless, captive people. The Plantation owners and overseers got into a more personal role with their slaves. The Sunday, Bible preaching justifying their role and the preaching to push their captives into passivity and acceptance. The Bible always seems to turn up, to justify whatever the preacher needs it to justify, in this case, the unspeakable cruelty of slavery. How deluded these slave holding, Planation owners were. Rape, whippings and lynching all part of a culture to terrorize the helpless, they needed to amass personal wealth and privilege. I am having trouble reconciling the culture of todays south longing for that bygone time and fighting to preserve white privilege, even now. There was no romance in that era. There is only shame. The movie just brought to life in living color a part of our history, we need to remember in its proper perspective. I know now, why this movie isnt shown in the south.
