The museum’s researchers, led by David King and Julian Martin, consulted the Naval Military Press and the Commonwealth War Graves Commission records to find out who was killed in battle. They traced prisoners of war at the Surrey History Centre, recipients of the silver war badge (for injured troops sent home) at the National Archives and recipients of gallantry medals through the London Gazette. “We’ve made good progress so far, better than I expected,” Mr Chatfield said. “The ones who died are easy to track down, sadly, but it has been difficult to find information about those who survived the war. “Work was very slow at the start but once we knew which records to consult, we were able to work faster. “Next year, we will cover the regiments’ activities in 1915. We want to present each campaign as it happened, so people understand that the First World War was about more than just the Battle of the Somme.”
