The mustard seed serves as an example for us. The seed though small produces a strong healthy tree on which rests many birds. Some young Christians were attending an international summer camp. One project the leaders assigned them was to think up more effective ways to spread God’s word in the world. The most provocative suggestion came from an African girl, who said: “When Christians in my country think a pagan village is ready for Christianity, they don’t send books or missionaries. They send a good Christian family. The family converts the village.” It is true that the family has a significant role to play in the development of the Christian; to experience parental love, and filial bonding; to have the experience of trial and success within the family does much to mold a person in the love and faithfulness of the Blessed Trinity. Vocations to the priesthood and consecrated life are nurtured within the branches of the family. What is the Kingdom of God like? Like each and every family who gathers in prayer and in laughter and in hope.
