The name Hyderabad means Hyders abode or lion city, derived from the Persian/Urdu words haydar or hyder (lion) and ābād (city or abode).[4] According to John Everett-Heath, the author of Oxford Concise Dictionary of World Place Names, Hyderabad was named to honour the Imam Ali Ibn AbuTalib AS, who was also known as Hyder because of his lion-like valour in battles. He was named Hyder by his mother and he introduced himself by this title in the famous one to one combat in the battle of Khandaq (Trench)I am one whose mother has named me Hyder the outcome of which resulted in loss of morale of the opponent army.
