The ‘names of God’ - do you remember on the 1st of December, - TopicsExpress

The ‘names of God’ - do you remember on the 1st of December, in the second reading (John 13;13), Jesus was called ‘Lord’ (Adonai), this was no casual ordinary title, but one with deep significance and one understood by the Jewish people both leaders and ordinary people. The ‘names of God’ to the Hebrews are not simply ‘names’, but epithets – meaning they describe the different aspects of God. Religious Jews were forbidden from using the name of God (Yahweh), shortening His name to YHWH. You may have seen some Christians today following this practice using the term ‘G-d’. I personally don’t as I like to think through the coming of Jesus, the veil has been torn down between us and Father God, Jesus said ‘I no longer call you servants, but friends. However, I feel neither way is wrong when done out of Godly sincerity and not imposed on others. Jesus and the term Adonai (Master, Lord as in God) used by the Jews to refer to God. Many during His life called Jesus ‘Adonai’ recognising Him as God (his divinity), others chose not to recognise or believe who He was and for this they killed Him. # Look at the different epithets describing God, think about what they say really God is and also, the relationship we can and do have with Him. # Let us have no doubt; both Jesus and the Scriptures are clear about Jesus’ divinity as evidenced in the reading below through Jesus calling God Father. Bible Reading – John 15:15-17 14 You are my friends if you do what I command. 15 I no longer call you servants, because a servant does not know his master’s business. Instead, I have called you friends, for everything that I learned from my Father I have made known to you. 16 You did not choose me, but I chose you and appointed you so that you might go and bear fruit—fruit that will last—and so that whatever you ask in my name the Father will give you. 17 This is my command: Love each other. Prayer for the Day 3th December 2014 Almighty God, purify our hearts and minds, that when your Son Jesus Christ comes again as judge and saviour we may be ready to receive him who is our Lord and our God Amen Tim Eady Sam Prince
