The names of an Edgecombe County Sheriffs deputy and the man he fatally wounded Monday were released Wednesday by N.C. Attorney General Roy Coopers office. K9 officer Darrick Winders was identified as the deputy who took down 41-year-old Kenneth Shawn Todd, the press release states. The Edgecombe County Sheriffs Office and District Attorney Robert Evans requested the SBI investigate the incident. According to the press release issued by the Edgecombe County Sheriffs Office, the action took place around 4 p.m. when Winders was called to investigate a domestic dispute at Todds residence on US 258 South near Macclesfield. When the officer arrived at the scene, he observed a weapon in Todds possession, the press release states. Winders ordered Todd to drop his weapon, but he refused and charged the deputy, the press release states. Winders reacted by shooting Todd. Winders is on paid leave pending the investigation by the SBI, said Edgecombe County County Sheriff James Knight.
