The naysayers continue to doubt this Alabama Baseball team and they keep posting win after win, increasing their SEC overall lead with a series opening 8-5 win tonight at Tennessee. The Tide got another strong Friday performance from Spencer Turnbull, coupled with an early 8 run onslaught in squeezing the not so big Orange. Spencer had good command tonight holding the Vols to a single hit for the first 5 innings, while netting 6 strike outs. Bama got on the board in the 3rd, scoring 4 runs. Mikey White started the inning with a rocket double that went to the wall in left. Georgie Salem followed with a bunt single & when the throw was off target, Mikey trotted home with the games first run. Ben Moore & Wade Wass then delivered back to back singles to load the bases with no outs. After Moore scored on a balk, Casey Hughston continued his hot hitting, dumping a 2 out 2 run single into left field to increase the Tide advantage to 4-0. The Tide added a run in the 4th as Willie Haynie drew a leadoff walk & was sacrificed to 2nd by White. Moore got the RBI as he drove a 2 out single that scored Haynie. The Bama lead grew to 8-0 as they scored their final 3 runs in the 5th. Kyle Overstreet drew a leadoff walk, followed by an Austen Smith single to left. Chance Vincent hit a long sacrifice fly that scored Kyle & Smith tallied a run on a wild pitch. Haynie closed the scoring as he hit a towering opposite field home run. Tennessee finally got on the board as Will Maddox hit a lead off home run in the 6th. Turnbull responded by retiring the side, while recording his 7th & 8th strike outs. Bama led 8-1 after 6. The Vols scored 3 runs in the 7th & had the bases loaded with the bases loaded & 1 out in the 8th. Alabama brought in closer Thomas Burrows, and as he has done all year, made short work of UT. Tennessee did score a single run in the 8th on a sac fly, but Burrows stranded a pair as he struck out Maddox to end the inning. From there, Burrows showed why he is one of the conferences best as he retired the Vols in order in the 9th, with 2 via the strike out. Thomas retired all 5 batters faced in gaining the save. Spencer Turnbull got the Bama win tonight which was his 5th win of the season. Alabama got multi hit games from Salem, Moore, & Hughston. Hughston knocked in a pair, and Haynie (HR) & White (2B) had extra base hits for the Tide. Bama goes for the series clinching win tomorrow as they take on Tennessee again, with reigning SEC Pitcher of the Week Justin Kamplain getting the ball for the Tide. Fist pitch from Lindsey Nelson Stadium is slated for 3:00 pm CT. Alabama improves to 27-11 on the season & 11-5 in the SEC. Good night & Roll Tide!
