The new Stephen King book, Revival, was pretty OK. Parts of it--the horror parts--felt forced; the sentimental nostalgia rang the truest. The book is informed by Nicola Tesla, Mary Shellys Frankenstein, and yes, the Lovecraft Mythos. Where it worked well, the horror and the quotidian came together in a manner reminiscent of Pet Semetary, one of his best (and most terrifying) works. Maybe its that both books are a meditation on death and what may lie beyond; probably the primary human existential terror. But King is now edging towards the end of his life, and the reflections on what have come before have a bittersweetness that feels new. As a reader, I was happy to indulge him.
