The new Swedish government’s plan to close its cultural institutes in the Mediterranean has led to a storm of protest. The Royal Swedish Academy of Letters, History and Antiquities has criticised the planned closure, calling it an “ill-conceived decision” that “lacks a motivation based on research policy”. And an online petition to save the institutes in Rome, Athens and Istanbul has gained thousands of supporters.
