The new trailer for the re-release of 2001: A Space Odyssey is - TopicsExpress

The new trailer for the re-release of 2001: A Space Odyssey is some of the worst shite Ive ever seen and its not only a disgrace, its completely misleading for anyone who hasnt seen the film yet. It makes the film seem like a space thriller and uses shots from all over the film willy-nilly, thus cutting together the idea of a story that will for sure not be delivered to the audience. It actually reminds me of those re-cut to... trailers, where people take a movie trailer (or the movie itself) and re-cut a trailer for it to make it seem like its from another genre. There are some masterful ones out there making The Shining into a comedy and Disney films like Mary Poppins or Sleeping Beauty into horror movies. This new trailer for 2001 smacks of these, except unintentionally so. As such, it is entirely misleading and does the film a great disservice when it comes to new audiences for it. Anyone seeing this trailer is bound to be puzzled and disappointed when they actually sit in their cinema seats. How is that supposed to help introduce this masterpiece to a whole new generation? Jan Harlan, who is quoted in the article from THR which Im linking to, must be out of his mind to say this is best trailer for the film hes ever seen. I have to admit, it must be very difficult to cut a trailer for 2001 and make the movie seem appealing. The film has a unique tempo and atmosphere and it lives on not exactly telling a straightforward plot, but on creating feelings and associations within the viewers, that they can then interpret whichever way they want. Trying to convey that in a trailer, a medium designed to attract a maximum of people to come and see the film in theatres, is supremely tricky. Nevertheless, I could think of half a dozen ways, right off the top of my head, that would have been a better tactic and, most importantly, would have been more faithful to the film - both what is explicitly seen and told and the multitudinous messages and feelings it arouses. All I can say about this re-release is: dont watch or believe this trailer and just go and see this incomparable movie on the big screen (and ONLY the big screen). Youll be richer for it. hollywoodreporter/news/2001-a-space-odyssey-gets-742481
