The newest patient of our Critical Care Program, Louie. Louie, a Pitbull Terrier mix, was surrendered to our shelter in very poor condition and on the verge of death. He is another case of a loving dog that had been neglected, abused and not properly cared for. Louie was presented to us severely emaciated and frail, he was fighting to survive. We immediately rushed him to the veterinarians at Pet Haven Animal Hospital for emergency care and stabilization. Upon initial examination by our veterinarian, Louie was found to have a body temperature that was too low to even register on the thermometer. He was placed on IV fluids and heating pads in an effort to help raise his body temperature. With the help of Dr. Amy Ford of Noahs Ark Veterinary Practice, Louie was transferred to Veterinary Emergency and Referral Group, where he can be attended to 24/7 and receive the critical care that he needs. Initially, we could not believe that Louie reached this state of emaciation from starvation alone. Was there a foreign body trapped inside or something else medically wrong with him? Further testing showed that Louie was simply neglected and starved to near death. This poor baby is now fighting for his life. We are looking into this case to find out who was responsible for the neglect and abuse of this innocent pup. Louie is now safe with us, and we will provide him with the medical care he needs and the love he deserves. We are optimistic for Louie, but we know that his survival is not guaranteed. If Louie does pull through, he will need weeks of hospitalization and rehabilitation. Louie will need all of your positive thoughts and energy in order to help him recover.
