The news from here has spread a bit, but some of yall dont know yet that I am leaving IT journalism/IDG. My last day will be Dec. 19, so we have sufficient time for the transition my leaving will entail. Ive appreciated the opportunities Ive had over these 17+ years - its really been a terrific run and wonderful to work with so many exceptional journalists who have become dear friends, but Im ready to shift gears and have time freed up to do some writing on topics that light me up (the latest iPhone, not so much). I expect to also get more involved in social justice advocacy and activism than Ive been able to since Ive always been wary of conflicts of interest -- even within niche journalism it can be impossible to know what you might wind up having to cover or edit someday. Weve registered a couple of domains for future blogging. And I plan to spend a lot of the winter catching up on the bookshelves of unread books in the house, particularly around issues of race, African-American history, the antebellum period, baseball (of course!), theology, climate change, feminism, and other topics that Ive long been keen to learn more about, and about which I expect to write. Yeah, I would definitely entertain some freelance editing opportunities as well. Ive really grooved on being an editor/coach, so maybe a little consulting is in my future too. And I really am going to carve out time to write those Cat World Stories Ive been telling some of yall for years now. Im also looking forward to being able to hibernate on the unappealing days of the coming New England winter, and to just puttering around the house, playing with the kitties, taking naps ...
