The news of negotiations comes as parents say the girls are being sold into marriage to Boko Haram militants. The students are being paid 2,000 naira ($12) to marry the fighters, Halite Aliyu of the Borno-Yobe People’s Forum told The Associated Press. She said the parents’ information about mass weddings is coming from villagers in the Sambisa Forest, on Nigeria’s border with Cameroon, where Boko Haram is known to have hideouts. (See also: latimes/world/africa/la-fg-nigeria-kidnapping-20140624-story.html) They are paying the students $12, and this is the premise of the brides wealth which is supposed to be given to the family in exchange for taking their daughter; which in doing so, decreases the families workers, or rather someone else who could bring income into the home. In this we note, that culturally there should also be an arrangement made with the parents in agreement with, typically the father, who agrees with the perspective husband. However, as we see kidnapping does not equal arrangement.
