The next Sustainable Sarasota Community Partnership meeting is Monday, July 1st, 2013 at the County Administration Center, 1660 Ringling Blvd., 2nd floor Conference Room A/B from 2:00 pm. to 3:30 pm. Healthy Sarasota County is an effort that is active in many settings throughout our community – schools, child care centers, clinics, and after school programs. A common message, 5210, links this work and provides four simple, everyday goals. Our speaker for July will be Kari Ellingstad, Director, Community Health Improvement Partnership (CHIP); Sarasota County Health Department, “Working Together to Improve Community Health" For several years in Sarasota County, interested residents and organizational partners have come together to develop strategies to address healthy weight. The concept of the Healthy Sarasota County “brand” is a product of that work and partnership. In the summer of 2011, that work began to evolve further when a Sarasota County group earned the distinction of being selected as just one of ten teams in the nation to participate in phase 1 of the Healthy Weight Collaborative. A federal initiative supported by the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) and guided by the National Initiative for Children’s Healthcare Quality (NICHQ) , the aim of the Healthy Weight Collaborative (HWC) is to enable multi-sector Teams (consisting of primary care, public health and community sector participants) to implement selected evidence-based strategies to accelerate progress towards community-wide healthy weight and health equity. In a short period of time, the Healthy Sarasota County Collaborative has made significant strides in implementing these strategies and has already begun to see positive outcomes of this work. Using a quality improvement approach, the team has been working across sectors to enhance processes, practices and policies targeted to addressing healthy weight. A common healthy lifestyle message, 5-2-1-0 (emphasizing 5 fruits and vegetables a day, 2 hours of recreational screen time or less, 1 hour of physical activity and 0 sugary drinks), links the work in each of these areas. This presentation will highlight the work that has been done in schools, health care settings, child care settings, and workplaces, and will reflect on the partnership approach necessary for improving community. chip4health.org/ Come hear about what our CHIP friends are doing for a Healthy Sarasota County, the 5210 Challenge and how you can get connected to healthy choices, you won’t want to miss Kari’s presentation.
