The night before first grade, my mother sat my brother and I down - TopicsExpress

The night before first grade, my mother sat my brother and I down to explain that we were adopted. Her reasoning was sound. She knew that kids could be cruel and any piece of information that made them different, would be sized upon and made use of on the playground. She wanted us to know the facts. She explained adoption to us like this: God, gave you to us; Joesset and Michael klocek, to love and to raise until you are ready to go out into the world and fulfill your mission. Thats a very beautiful way to explain the concept of adoption to a kid about to enter first grade. I was sent to a private catholic school and on the first day it was very important to them to explain the central beliefs of the religion to us. Jesus, so the head principal and priest explained, was given to Joseph and Marry; to love and raise, until he was ready to fulfill his mission in the world. Sound familiar? It did to me, too. Thats why on the first day of first grade when each student had to stand up and say something about themselves, I stood up and said, Im joey and Im a messiah. I thought it was the same thing as being adopted so I thought, how cool is that? I have that in common with Jesus! Kids are laughing at me and Im yelling back, I am to the messiah the teacher is shaking her head, your not the messiah, and again Im like, I am to! My mother told me! That was my first day of first grade. And people ask why I ended up becoming a stand-up comic?
