The north side of the foundation building looks a little different - TopicsExpress

The north side of the foundation building looks a little different this morning: a red flag flies in place of the usual Cooper Union logo. The red square is a symbol of protest over student debt and, with regards to Cooper’s crowning as the largest tuition increase at a private college since 1998, a rallying point of student solidarity. First year students coordinated the action with help from students across all schools and all years out of concern for the present state of the school. Now is not the time to be passive about the forced, top-down reinvention of our school. Now is the time to take action for our vision of the Cooper Union. The conversation about what the value of a free education is to each of us as members of the Cooper Union community needs to be reignited, among students both paying and tuition-free. Tonight (December 9) is the Student Trustee mixer, the perfect moment for student to express their concerns to the trustees in person. Ask about the trustee’s commitment to returning the school to free, inquire about Cooper’s new direction and expanded programs, express your views Jamshed Bharucha (whose contract is set to be renewed soon) and the current administration. Our hope is to empower students to participate in a renewed discourse and create new actions. Make your vision of Cooper Union known. This dialogue is crucial to our identity as a school and our stake in the state of higher education at large. The freshman class would like you to know that the ideals of free education are alive and well and the fight is far from over.
