The notion that manicures may transmit HIV is silly. Read the article making claim it’s mostly about how rare, unusual and unlikely this is… if it is even true! “Dr Michael Brady, Medical Director at Terrence Higgins Trust, echoed that this is a rare case. He said: This is a highly unusual case. It is often very difficult to be certain as to the source of an HIV infection – especially one that happened over a decade ago – and it is hard to imagine how HIV could be caught from manicure equipment.” Some have commented they’re glad they do their own nails, but they clearly didn’t read the article. If true, this incident occurred when someone was doing their own nails at home. This has nothing to do with a salon service and is clearly among the rarest of events, if true. I discussed the potential for HIV in salons in a recent episode of my weekly video series, Face-to-Face with Doug Schoon. I’d estimated that since the HIV epidemic began in 82 at least 6 billion nail services have been performed with no HIV transmissions, so the odds must be greater than 1 in 6 billion. I’d say you have better things to worry about!
