The octogenarian pro-freedom leader of Kashmir – Syed Ali Geelani – who is under house arrest for over twenty days and isbarred from holding public rallies or attend Friday’s congregational prayers, often resorts to telecommunication and internet to address people.Government forces repeatedly put Geelani under house arrest and allow only ‘few people’ to meet him. This Friday he was once again barred from attending congregational prayers. “A large contingent of police has laid a siege at his residence since October 31,” a party spokesperson said. However, despite curbs on his free movement,Geelani manages to address people, includingvarious rallies and seminars. Telephone and new-media come to his aid.Today, November 21, he addressed the funeralcongregation of slain militants who were killed in an encounter with police last evening.Over his telephonic address, he paid tributes to the deceased and said, “These youth are presenting their precious lives against forced occupation, coercion and for securing our future.”Geelani has earlier also addressed various funerals. Workers of his party – Hurriyat Conference (G) – mostly arrange public address systems to get his voice heard by large number of assembled people as he speaks over telephone.Earlier this year, Geelani even addressed an international conference organized by Islamic Forum in Greek. “The Kashmiri people are not against India or its people, but we want them to fulfil those promises which were guaranteed to us by Indian rulers in front of international community to hold plebiscite under the supervision of UNO,” he had said.In another telephonic address to a seminar organized in Srinagar, he had said, “One one hand, India is advocating resolution of Kashmir through dialogue and on the other refuses to acknowledge Kashmiris as prime party to the dispute. We must join hands and carry the movement to its logical conclusion. This would be the biggest tribute to our martyrs.”Geelani has also appeared on video sharing website YouTube many times. In one such video, following an inter-community violence in Baramulla town, he appealed people to live like siblings and emphasized that they were related both on religious and humanitarian basis.
