The oil and gas industry is getting desperate. They are creating millions upon millions of gallons of toxic fracking waste every year, and running out of places to dump it. The industrys newest plan to ship fracking waste by barge could contaminate the drinking water for more than 20 million Americans with toxic, and potentially radioactive fracking waste. The good news is that we can stop it! Tell the Coast Guard to oppose shipping fracking waste on U.S. waterways. Barge accidents are too common. In January, two barges struck a railroad bridge near Vicksburg, MS and spilled about 7,000 gallons of crude oil into the Mississippi River.¹ In February, two barges collided on the Mississippi River near Baton Rouge, LA, spilling barrels of oil.² And in May, a collision near Hartford, IL caused 14 barges to break away from their moorings, spilling oil into the river.³ Its not a matter of if there will be a spill, its when. The waste contains a host of toxic chemicals used in the fracking process, including known carcinogens and even radioactive materials. When a barge spills fracking waste, it is nearly impossible to clean up the mess, putting drinking water and entire ecosystems at risk. We have until November 29th to tell the Coast Guard that shipping fracking waste is a bad deal — its just not worth the risk. Despite the growing opposition to fracking, the Obama Administration is catering to the oil and gas industry, unnecessarily putting millions of Americans at risk. This new national policy is backed by commercial interests. GreenHunter Water wants to ship fracking waste from Pennsylvania to Ohio, Louisiana and Texas. This proposal alone could risk the drinking water for over 20 million Americans that get their water from the Ohio and Mississippi Rivers, and it would set a terrible precedent that could eventually put more of our water at risk. Dont let the Obama Administration and the Coast Guard jeopardize the drinking water for millions of Americans. The Coast Guard is trying to slip this new rule under the radar. Help make sure they hear from the American public loud and clear. Tell the Coast Guard: keep toxic fracking waste out of our national waterways. Submit a comment to the Coast Guard today, the comment period ends November 29: act.foodandwaterwatch.org/site/Advocacy?pagename=homepage&id=979 Thanks for taking action, Miranda Carter Online Organizer Food & Water Watch
