The old Chesapeake and Ohio railroad coaling tower and sand house, - TopicsExpress

The old Chesapeake and Ohio railroad coaling tower and sand house, in Thurmond WV, built in 1922 by Fairbanks, Morse and Co. The reinforced concrete structure was built by 25 workers hired by a New York construction firm. C&O used their steam engines longer than any other railroad company and after transiting to diesel locomotives, the tower was abandoned (1960). The B&W photo was taken while the tower was being built.
