The old way vs new way. Lets compare and contrast. Im noticing trends, and have the following theory (but not yet hard data to support this), Id love for you to chime in, am I onto something? Im factoring in the millennial behavior sets, anyones access to digital technologies, the rise of the collaborative economy startups, and economic downturn. Heres my thoughts, on the old way vs the new way: -Old way: winning is owning lots of stuff, house, two cars. -New way: winning is owning very little, as access without liability, is now easy via rent, and on-demand. -Old way: having a secure full time job for four decades, chained to a cube. -New way: working when and where you want, unchained, free to roam. -Old way: amass liquid and frozen assets in order to feel free. -New way: reduce living costs and liabilities in order to feel free. -Old way: live in a single family suburban home, less attached from community -New way: live in urban environment, connected to others. -Old way: same job for 40 years, in a full time gig. -New way: 4 jobs, simultaneously, as a freelancer. -Old way: save up money, retire, then travel. -New way: reduce costs and liabilities, travel now I dont have all the answers here, so please add an old vs new way in the comments. Also, Ive started my life in the old way, weve amassed stuff, and I worked many full time positions over the years. Now, technology is enabling easier access to the things I need and urban centers are improving their quality of life, where I choose to be most of the time --despite living in the suburbs. I was inspired by an interview with Adam Werbach on the Story of Stuff discussing how freedom is about owning less.
