The oldest depiction of Circassia (as a sovereign country) on a world map: Circassia (“zichia”) and Abkhazia (“aougaxi”) in Giovanni Leardo’s 1452/1453 Map of the World The mediæval name of Circassia was “Zichia”, from the national name used by the Circassians “Adiga” [«Адыгэ»], with slight corruption. The Map shows Circassia as the principal country in the Northwest Caucasus. It is bound by Mingrelia (“mengreli”) in the south. Abkhazia (“aougaxi”) is depicted as a large kingdom, encompassing inland Georgia. For explanation of the map and the place names, refer to John Kirtland Wright (1928). The part respecting Circassia is attached (Photograph 2). Giovanni Leardo, Venice, 1452 Mappamundi (Map of the world) The 15th-century Venetian cartographer Giovanni Leardo’s “Mappamundi” is one of the oldest intact world maps in the Western Hemisphere. The map depicts the parts of the world known to Europeans in the late Middle Ages. It is considered the finest example of a mediæval world map preserved in the Western Hemisphere.
