The one thing you learn as you grow older, the one thing they dont - TopicsExpress

The one thing you learn as you grow older, the one thing they dont teach you in school or college, the one thing your parents are always afraid to tell you, and usually dont tell you at least until youve already realized it yourself, is that life isnt fair. Not an inkling. Not even a tiny little bit. Lifes fairness is so infinitesimally small and limited, that it constitutes nothing but a cosmic afterthought. A little radiation left over from the big bang. Faded light, billions of years old, just reaching us now. That is how fair life is. It is harsh. Unforgiving. Unyielding and uninterested in what your plan is. It will bring you to your knees and kick you while youre down. And just when youre about to get up, when you think youre okay and you lift your head up, surfacing for air, it will decapitate you. What hope do we have, then? We learn to manage our disappointment. Find joy in little things that are otherwise not necessarily bags of fun. Like cupcakes. Like a good book (probably written by someone far more melancholic than you), and a nice cup of tea before bed. Like the feel of polished wood on a brand new guitar. That familiar rub of steel wound strings. The grip of a game controller. The scent of new air freshener. That gush of cold air when the air conditioning comes back on after a power cut. The sweat pouring down your back after a satisfying workout. The little things. There are no big things. Just collections of little things. I seemed a happy person recently, havent I? Guess Im just a good manager.
