The only European state that supported The Confederates in the American civil war was the Vatican city represented by its Pope Pius IX who sent an autographed photo of himself to Jefferson Davis along with a letter in which he called him: The honorable president of The Confederate States of America!. And later when The Union won the war, the pope sent another letter to Davis in his prison quoting Matthew 11:28: Come to me, all you that labor, and are burdened, and I will refresh you, sayeth the Lord, he also sent him a crown of thorn made by the hands of his so-called holiness. Away from the war, why would the pope, or any other sane person, support a barbaric dunderhead like Jefferson Davis?
