The only colour Australia needs to fear is the colour of money in its democracy ... and so says Rob Oakeshott in his Brown Paper Lags article in the The Saturday Paper weekend past calling for a royal commission into political donations. Couldnt think of a more appropriate issue to pursue with enhanced vigour... the relationship between public policy and political donations is rife and to deny impact is to live in a fools paradise. For a start it is blatantly obvious that it is this type of relationship that drives pro-coal/pro-mining policies that fly in the face of international environmental directions. Coal is good for humanity... give me a break. Coal is good for certain business entities who no doubt pass on some of that revenue to keep this as primary focus. That said I dont think this goes far enough... the past bunch of elections have left me wondering why we allow advertising industry tactics to dominate this process. ALL political television advertising should be removed from the process as it confuses and simplifies major issues and promotes vindictive campaigns of smear and denigation. Political campaigns should come down to presentations of policy and debate... not advertorial style manipulation as presented by biased media organisations. Anyway... head to this petition here and lets push for enquiry while ICAC is running hot. This is a growing monster that needs a large dose of salt thrown on it on all levels. avaaz.org/en/petition/The_GovernorGeneral_of_Australia_approve_a_Royal_Commission_into_Australian_political_donation_reform/?csEexib If you didnt read in this print copy then here is a online link to the article: thesaturdaypaper.au/opinion/topic/2014/10/18/royal-commission-needed-political-donations/14135508001137#.VERkhdwdvFQ
