The only prerequisite for becoming American: hate for an enemy we do not know. But since hate derives from fear of the unknown, the American must also remain true to an ignorance that consciously ignores itself in the ever-threatening face of dissent. Though it is usually the military adventures, corporate exploits and constant actions of the US empire that annihilates and/or alarms the global masses, we are the first to run for cover at the mere possibility that some enemy may pose the kind of real threat that the United States imposes upon the rest of the world. How dare we forget the memorable lessons of history! How dare we fight humanitys battles alone. How dare we attack the reputation and character of any nation for violating human rights that we respect solely in theory. In practice, the American is one who loves America so much that he would give up his only begotten sons to sustain our unrightfully attained place as a global leader in mass-imprisonment, military spending and so many other forms of one and the same bloody war. In the names of Mumia Abu-Jamal and Leonard Peltier, I pray for America to end this war; a war on democracy, a war on dissent, a war on immigrants, a war on the working poor... In the names of so many more, I pray for the American prison to open its doors.
