The only thing scarier than hearing your doctor say its breast - TopicsExpress

The only thing scarier than hearing your doctor say its breast cancer, is hearing them say the cancer has spread. Thats because 90% of all breast cancer deaths occur when the cancer metastasizes — or spreads from the breast into vital organs like the bones, liver, lungs or brain. And there is no cure. Thats why, thanks to supporters like you, since 2006, Komen has invested in nearly 200 research grants to help better understand and treat this type of breast cancer. Learn more about metastatic, or stage IV, breast cancer and how your support helps. Maura Bivens knows firsthand about metastatic breast cancer. When Maura first found out she had breast cancer, she was 38 and a mom of three kids under the age of 10. She bravely battled the disease — and even earned her black belt in taekwondo soon after treatment. But less than two years later, Mauras breast cancer had spread to her lungs. It was metastatic. Maura fought back. She drew on the strength of the Komen community and her martial arts passion. And while Maura knows shell likely be fighting breast cancer for the rest of her life, shes beaten it back. And now shes enjoying every moment with her family. Thats what its all about — enjoying and protecting those moments — and thats why were here! I hope youll join us for a Komen Twitter Chat on metastatic breast cancer tonight at 8 p.m. Eastern.
