The open secret. Srila Prabhupad so often describes Krishna consciousness as the open secret. The following clearly alludes to this. The most secret of all secrets but it gives direct perception of the self by realization raja-vidya raja-guhyam, pavitram idam uttamam pratyaksavagamam dharmyam, su-sukham kartum avyayam This knowledge is the king of education, the most secret of all secrets. It is the purest knowledge, and because it gives direct perception of the self by realization, it is the perfection of religion. It is everlasting, and it is joyfully performed. Bg 9.2 And how to tap that, what is the secret process that is an open book? satatam kirtayanto mam, yatantas ca drdha-vratah namasyantas ca mam bhaktya, nitya-yukta upasate Always chanting My glories, endeavoring with great determination, bowing down before Me, these great souls perpetually worship Me with devotion. Bg 9.14 Now adays I have formed a little Krishna book club where I am staying to try to make progress my biography of Srila Prabhupad. Its been 44 years since I have been reading Krishna book and I am amazed that in the association of devotees interested in hearing about Krishna, each time I hear from this book, it is exactly like I have never heard it before, it is so fresh, amazing, exhilerating and I get new realizations, many of them, each time. I sometimes wonder how I will make it past anartha nivritti, the subtle material tendencies to want to Krishnas energies and develop that real niscyit, that real satatam of always being absorbed in thinking of Krishna and serving Him with love. But whenever I get a nice chance to kirtanyanto mam hear and chant about Krishna that question evaporates, the secret is opend and gives pratyaksavagamam dharmyam direct perception of the self by realization and enables my little tiny soul, my insignificant self to become very happy. Sri Isopanishad sings of this condition: kurvann eveha karmani, jijivisec chatam samah evam tvayi nanyatheto sti, na karma lipyate nare One may aspire to live for hundreds of years if he continuously goes on working in that way, for that sort of work will not bind him to the law of karma. There is no alternative to this way for man. Iso mantra 2 Being Krishna conscious and serving Krishna in that way, enlightening oneself by being in the association of devotees, under the guidance of the pure devotee(s), one feels such joy that one may aspire to live for hundreds of years. When will that be mine that Krishna favors me to always avail of the bountiful mercy I have already received through 45 years of ISKCON devotee association and 48 years of chanting the Maha-Mantra and reading Bhagvad Gita and Srila Prabhupad capturing me with his love, extending himself and chasing me every way I invented to hide from him? Then will Krishna grant me my desire to waste no time, not a second, in sleep, nor need to eat, except for that joyus seva of honoring with great care and savouring Sri Krishna Prasad. It seems so easy when we are plugged into that secret outlet, Srila Prabhupad directly connecting us with Krishna. There is a price to pay, no doubt, it is not cheap but Srila Prabhupad by his immense love for Krishna has already spread that everywhere for everyone to avail.
