The organization of Human Rights Watch (HRW) called for an investigation after the discovery in recent weeks, several bodies in the Rweru lake on the border between Rwanda and Burundi. Human Rights Watch criticized the fact that investigations are stalled. Kigali and Bujumbura disclaim any responsibility. The organization of human rights Human Rights Watch (HRW) is not able to confirm the evidence collected by RFI. According to Burundian and Rwandan fishermen bordering Akagera, the bodies were thrown into the river in Rwanda, before landing in the lake, the Burundian side of the border. We have not been able to conduct our own investigations, but we are very worried. Both countries have more or less refused to seriously investigate and blame , said HRW researcher for the Great Lakes, Carina Tersakian. There has been no autopsy nor attempt to identify four bodies found by the Burundian authorities who preferred to bury, officially for health reasons. Two more bodies were recovered last week. However, Burundian and Rwandan fishermen talk about dozens of bodies since mid-July. We urge the Burundian and Rwandan authorities to conduct thorough and rigorous investigation to try first to establish the identity of the victims but also the circumstances that could lead to their death , says Carina Tersakian. The spokesperson of the Rwandan police, Damas Gatare, had denied the testimonies collected by RFI, ensuring that no body had been found on the Rwandan side of the border. He also said there had been no loss to Rwanda. Human Rights Watch has documented several cases of disappearances in 2014, especially since the month of March. There are some cases that we investigated in northeastern Rwanda. Some of these people have reappeared in prison after several weeks or several months. Others are still missing , said Carina Tersakian. rfi.fr/afrique/20140916-cadavres-lac-rweru-burundi-hrw-appelle-une-enquete/?aef_campaign_date=2014-09-16&aef_campaign_ref=partage_user&ns_campaign=reseaux_sociaux&ns_linkname=editorial&ns_mchannel=social&ns_source=twitter
