The origin of Western music and Western Notation lies in fact in - TopicsExpress

The origin of Western music and Western Notation lies in fact in Italy. Italy is the Home of written music. That is the reason why in written music, you find a lot of Italian words: for example Largo, Moderato, Lento and Presto are all words to describe the Tempo, or speed of music. In Italy and a few more Western countries, like France and Spain, the notes are described by their note names: do, re, mi, fa, sol, la, ti. This is the equivalent of the Indian sa, re, ga, ma, pa, dha, ni. If you want to buy a diatonic harmonica in the Key of G in Italy, you ask for a harmonica in Sol. Some classical music is described in the same way: Dvoraks Symphony in Ti-flat. But in Most countries in Europe, notes are named by the letters A to G. The A was named A simply because All pianos start with an A. Strangely enough however, A is Not the same as Do or Sa. The Do or Sa is the C. The Key of C is the Only key where you Only play the White keys on the piano, without any flats or sharps. That is also the reason why Western Notation is based on the Key of C; the Only key without any sharps or flats. So, that means that the Indian Tone-Ladder as we call it: Sa, Re, Ga, Ma, Pa, Dha, Ni, Sa Corresponds with our Western Notes: C, D, E, F, G, A, B, C. And if we take this theory Lesson a bit further, this is the reason why Most New harmonica players are advised to start with a harmonica in the key of C: Music, and Western Notation, are fully Based on the Key of C, and once again, the Key of C is the Only key without any flats or sharps, and the Only key that consists of all the Natural notes. And that is why the Key of C is the easiest Key to learn how to play, especially when you read music. This is just a little bit of General information, I hope you like it.
