The origin of secret cults in institution of higher learning in Nigeria is traced to Prof. Wole Soyinka, the first captain of the Pyrates Confraternity formed at University of Ibadan in 1952 . Wole Soyinka was the founder of the sea dogs, that made up of seven students. The cardinal objectives of the original pyrates were to fight social ills and preserve good moral conducts within and outsid the university campus and uphold comradeship. The members who could not meet up with the standard of the cult by misbehaving or failing exams were either suspended or expelled. When many students who applied for the membership of pyrates confraternity were not admitted and some were suspended from the cult, they resorted to forming other new cult though with diverse and questionable objectives. Some of the cult in higher institutions:Dragons,Green Barrett,Black scorpions, Black Cobra,Baracudas,Black Axe,Frigates,Eiye confraternity,Sonmen,Temple of Edon,Supreme Ekpo, etc. There are also few of the female cult groups such as:Amazon, pink ladies,Daughters of Jezebel,Royal Queens, Black Bra,Red Bra, etc. Effects of cultism in Nigerian society: the moment someone get initiated into secret cult, the person loss his personal identity. The members of secret cult is negative in their reasoning. Secret cult create atmospher of indiscipline, lawlessness, and insecurity of life and property, Etc.
