The original 11 foot model, which had been moved to the - TopicsExpress

The original 11 foot model, which had been moved to the Smithsonian gift shop for several years, has been taken down. Initially I was mortified to hear this, as the ol girl deserves her place there. However, shes going to be seeing another restoration lead by Doug Drexler, who has worked on many of the latter day Trek series, and also helps with various fan productions including Official Star Trek Continues. If rumors are to be believed shell be put back up on display in her proper place, NOT in the gift shop, but in the actual museum! Sometime in 2016. Just in time for Star Treks 50th. Interesting things to note. The size of the model. Its actually rather big, especially when you compare it to some of the contemporary models. Even the Enterprise built for the feature films was not as big (I believe it was only 8 or 9 feet.) Also, one entire side (Starboard, I believe.) is completely undetailed except for a few never-seen decals. This is because any time the ship was show flying in the opposite direction, the footage was merely flipped. This was a clever way of saving time and resources. Someday I hope to get a chance of seeing The Big E in person. 50 years old. The old girl survived her contemporaries, the Jupiter 2 from Lost in Space, and The Discovery from 2001 : A Space Odyssey. Both of which were lost to the annals of time. Danny Berger Matthew Berger Shizu Cska Andrew Lala Rowe Jon St John
