The origins of the study of Grammar. The study of grammar was born in the east- it was developed by a Sanskrit scholar from the Brahmin caste with a strangely Italian sounding name Panini. His analysis of Sanskrit has been described as being perfect !- This was some 400 years before Christ !! The first western grammarian was an ancient Greek scholar named Dionysus Thrax- he was the first westerner who payed attention to different kinds of words parts of speech and to identify, nouns adjectives, verbs etc. and noted how these fitted together to form sentences. Our definition of a sentence as being a complete thought comes from him ! Thanks to Mr Don Liston for bringing him to my attention.
