The other day I asked a question: if you were time crunched, which would you choose, cardio or lifting?Lifting was the clear winner. Cardio gets no love. And why is that? Some say its hard, others say its boring. But what makes it hard, and what makes it boring? Heres my guess: People find cardio hard because they dont like how uncomfortable it makes them. They dont like that theyre huffing and puffing after only a minute. Lifting is easier cause its done in less than 30 sec, then you get to rest. People find cardio boring, but thats probably cause theyre not thinking outside the box. They probably think its going on the machines and mindlessly spinning their wheels on the same spot. If you do that, then hell yeah thats boring. So heres what you do. 1) You suck it up and do it. As much as lifting is important, its good to have a decent level of cardio conditioning behind you. You dont want to be as strong as an ox but be huffing and puffing after one flight of stairs; thats just embarrassing. 2) As long as your HR is elevated for a sustained amount of time, thats cardio. You dont have to go on the hamster wheel. Heck, you dont have to do the same thing over and over again. Mix it up. Use skip ropes, kettlebells, bodyweight, sled, medicine balls, etc. Be creative. Keep your HR up and keep moving. Cardio doesnt have to be hard, and it doesnt have to be boring. Suck it up, get it done, and have some fun.
