The other day, I was at a health and supplement store and the following conversation ensued between a customer and the person working there: Customer: Hi. Im looking for something that will speed up my metabolism. Store person: Try these pills. Customer: These pills will speed up my metabolism? Store person: Yes. Customer: Good. Because I REALLY need something that will speed up my metabolism. Youre saying this will do it? Store person: Absolutely, these pills give your metabolism a jump start. Customer: Great! Thats exactly what I need. Because, you see, my metabolism has stopped! Store person: Yes. That happens sometimes. These pills should do the trick though. And then the purchase followed. I was standing there biting my tongue, trying really hard not to say something because a) ones metabolism cannot stop, b) jump starting ones metabolism - by way of pills especially - doesnt make any sense, c) relying on metabolism boosting pills for weight-loss (which is what this lady was after) or even weight-maintenance is never really a good idea, d) a lot of these pills can negatively impact peoples health (by, for example, interfering with existing medical conditions and/or medications). But alas, these pills are out there. And people are selling them. And others are buying them... And I ask myself, where did attention to ones diet go? Where did the incorporation of a healthy exercise routine go? Where did education on healthy eating, macro/micro balance, and nutrition go? Why rely on these shortcuts? Its like putting a bandaid on a wound and letting the wound fester underneath it. What I wanted to say was this: If you want to boost your metabolism, EAT ENOUGH (dont undereat! women especially are prone to this and its a recipe for disaster) and EAT WELL. EXERCISE but EXERCISE INTELLIGENTLY (dont just go nuts on cardio! embrace the weights). DRINK PLENTY OF WATER. SLEEP WELL. If you want, incorporate a few cups of green tea in your diet. MAKE SURE YOU EAT ENOUGH FIBER. MOVE! And BE HAPPY - ok, the last one wont rev up your metabolism proper, but itll make you smile. Reposted from Protein Pow(d)er Recipes. Thank you for making sense! :)
