The other day, I was having a nice conversation with Ashley - TopicsExpress

The other day, I was having a nice conversation with Ashley Wolters the other day about Common Core. I was trying to make the Tuesday meeting, but was called out to fly a trip to Dublin. During the discussion, I said there is a lot of information on this out there on this subject and Im not sure all of it is accurate or pertinent. Two of the complaints I came up with that rang with me were 1. People worried about the data the state is collecting from our kids and 2. a parent was concerned that 4th grade math was too hard or not age appropriate. So as I was thinking about it, i wanted to say a couple of things. 1. I wish the federal department of education didnt exist. It is an over reach of the federal government. Ive felt that way about a lot of issues. Now that fact doesnt make CC a horrible thing, I just wish the state hadnt switched to it based on the federal money held over them and 2. It wont bother me (and many administrators) if I woke up tomorrow morning and Illinois pulled out of CC, but the follow on issue becomes, now what? Illinois has had standards since the 90s, (maybe longer), so some kind of state standard will come next. Our kids will outpace any average standard that is put out there, but we also have to follow state law. One thing I think works very well in life is when you are trying to get rid of something or change something, if you offer an alternative that is better or different. So I think here on this forum, if people are game, lets see what we would change to if we got rid of common core. We can review the CC standards for each grade level in Math and LA (that is all that is out there at this time) and see what we like and dont like and what we would like changed. In order to have a common reference, here is an official CC website corestandards.org
