The outpouring of support, still being logged, from such an overwhelming number of you at the news of THE APPRENTICESHIP OF DUDDY having its premiere at last, has been more than hugely gratifying. Thank you all so very much. Those who expressed fond memories of the 87 workshop and Philly production, DUDDY is literally a different show now, that just happens to share the same title (some of the songs remain, most altered to some degree, but about 2/3 are new) but worry not; I think the new version will make you even happier; the storytelling is far cleaner and more focused and the score even stronger. I dont, of course, have any idea what the shows life will be after Montreal (though well be approaching every life-extending front we can); but even getting this far … I sort of hate to say something as trite as it feels like a vindication, because nothing about the history of this show is unnuanced (adventures, misadventures and a cast of characters to rival Duddys own) and any generalization is an oversimplification; but the recent developments that made the coming production possible…the chain of serendipity…the unambiguous acceptance and enthusiasm, taking the material on its own terms…the sense of not only finding a home, but *coming* home…of being able to put forth work that…how to put this…I think Alan and I have written as well, here and there, together and apart; but weve never written better. Ever. Which is why we never gave up; and…well, I dont want to jinx it by saying too much more. But oh yes. Yes indeed. On a deeply personal level, in more ways than I dare articulate in a public forum, this is a thing…Thanks again.
