The owners of Pype Hayes Hall are planning to demolish four of the listed outer buildings. They aim to transform the Hall into a banqueting hall and a 60 bedroom hotel with spa and a range of supporting facilities, but say that the outer buildings are in the way of the development, and make the site financially unviable. The owners now want to demolish the old World War II air raid shelter, and buildings in the car park and near the old stables and barn. Bromford Mill Properties bought Pype Hayes Hall from Birmingham Council, on the understanding that they would preserve its historic status, refurbish the main building and restore the damaged outer buildings. The application states: “The frontage to the barn is considered to have some heritage value but the remaining structures are considered to be of low value and can reasonably be demolished subject to Listed Building consent.” Listed buildings are considered to be of historic importance, and have greater protection from planning applications. Specific permission has to be obtained before altering or demolishing a listed building.
