The part that really touched me deeply was when we broke into small groups with a translator and everyone in each little group was invited to share real stories about driving for them. It was a very human experience to simple really listen and hear some of the heartbreaking stories of mothers trying to get their children to medical care being pulled over simply because they were hispanic and having their cars impounded on the spot because they had no license ~ and they were left standing by the side of the road. There were common threads to the stories including the thousands of $$ it took to finally get their cars back. Mostly it was looking into their eyes and seeing their humanity just like us. I felt deeply tender. I shared my little story of being pulled over and I didnt know why, and I cried because I felt fear. Turns out I had a tail light out in the back and didnt know about it. I had a drivers license so no one took my car away. When I went to school years ago, there was a man who taught and wrote a book, his name was Martin Buber. What he spoke about was the difference it makes when we experience others in an I/Thou way or an I/it way. To me these small group conversations allow us to meet in the I/Thou place regardless of the particular topic. I believe in the I/Thou place we can come together and find creative solutions to most things. Carole Peccorini EL verano, Neighbor
