The participation of the CULTURAL PROGRAMMES AND HERITAGE FESTIVALS COMMITTEE EXHIBITION STAND - ADIHEX 2014 EDITION MEDIA Briefing GENERAL INTRODUCTION TO THE EXHIBITION A bilingual exhibition stand which explores aspects of Emirati identity by focusing on the theme of tangible and intangible heritage through crafts that are linked to hunting and fishing; The aim of the exhibition is to interpret the significances of Emirati Traditional Handicrafts from the standpoints of history, identity, Emirati personality, heritage and other themes. It showcases traditional Emirati craft objects and the techniques and tools linked to them, key elements from Emirati material and intangible culture and practices as well as content about the socio-cultural, economic background of the objects and techniques presented in an accessible and engaging manner that provides the public with a meaningful experience and makes a constructive and educational long-lasting impact on them. The exhibition includes: • An outer skin that presents the work of the Committee in its full gamut with special focus on the tremendous impact the Committee is achieving amongst the different Communities and people in the UAE; • Two units and one major open area each holding a live demonstration of the traditional handicraft amidst object displays and traditional local artifacts as well as tools relating to traditional practices and customs of the UAE as well as museum standard interpretative; • Two majlises showcasing some of CPHFC’s key initiatives: Shawati Magazine, Poetry Academy and Al Dhafra Festival; • One stage which will present a programme of poetry, music and live Television broadcasting by Abu Dhabi’s Bainuna TV; • Several large craft objects which are displayed in the open; • Ayyalas and other Emirati cultural and identity related demonstrations that take place in the open spaces of the exhibition. The exhibition targets all sections of society and all age groups while serving the strategic vision of CPHFC, specifically in this exhibition, through shedding light on the different links that crafts maintain to the subject of local cultural identity and the social fabric of Abu Dhabi culture. THEME OF THE EXHIBITION SURVIVAL (addressed through craft objects and craft-making) The curatorial concept of the exhibition is elaborated around the theme of Survival, which is central to the history and trajectory of the Emirati people and their rulers from the early periods until today. The exhibition will reference the history and the characteristic traits of the UAE people and their ongoing journey of resilience, reinvention and renewal in the aim to survive and progress to always conquer the challenges of the times. Through the theme of Survival, will be elaborated themes from Emirati tangible and intangible heritage that are directly linked to the subject of hunting and fishing and related themes such as: – Weaponry, the making of gunpowder, – Daggers, swords and knives – Boat making, (Fishing & sailing). EXHIBITION LAYOUT THE MAHADER LIWA CONCEPT The exhibition space is conceived and laid out as an interpretation of the local historical landscape: ‘Mahader Liwa’. This organic approach gives freedom to the visitor to explore, understand and interact with the space and the exhibits within it. Similar to the actual Mahader, where the settlements constitute anchors in a broadly defined landscape, as well as represent links to the cohesive social structure embedded within a desert landscape, the exhibition space includes several exhibition units and other features that are scattered around the exhibition space but connected through their purpose, meaning, content and different but complementary functions. EXHIBITION DISLAY APPROACH: THE MAJLIS This approach is inspired by the functional hierarchy within Majlis interiors where the matrices occupy the ground level, benches are elevated where people would sit, and niches and openings in the walls of the Majlis are used to keep objects for decoration as well as use; Following the Majlis’s internal structure, the exhibits within the 2 display units contain different layers of presentation and interpretation: – A central raised podium where the craftsman/woman demonstrate craft-making; – A stepped bench with artifacts relating to the tools used in the making of the craft and depicting old and contemporary museum quality objects; – A secondary raised step highlighting other key objects; – The walls of the unit which constitute the interpretive space to explain the different dimensions of the craft.
