The passing of the Right of Children to Free and Compulsory Education (RTE) Act 2009 marked a historic moment for the children of India. For the first time in India’s history, children were guaranteed their right to quality elementary education by the state with the help of families and communities. The Act came into force on April 1, 2010 and specified a three year timeline for meeting provisions related to the rights of children, teachers, schools and monitoring with a focus on child friendly and child centered curriculum.
