The past few weeks have been very difficult for me. Earlier, I was given a simple task that eventually became overwhelming it had to take myself away from my kids whom i entrusted to my aunt and a house help. I had fight guilt and homesickness in order to accomplish the mission. That phrase por la patria, para sa bayan are hackneyed terms for some government employees. But to me and to others for sure, it means the whole world. It means serving God who created the world. Typhoons Sendong, Pablo & Yolanda, landslides, flashfloods and the like are disaster events I have to death with. Its risk reduction, impact and implications to people, environment, systems, institutions, etc are what make up my work. God knows I did my best but I can only do so much. I am just grateful that there are still a lot of people especially from the government who still uphold public service and not personal interest. These are ordinary government employees such as those who do the challenging PDNA for Typhoon Yolanda for 2 months in the field, those Police officers and City government employees who risked their lives in the middle of the night to save those were trapped in their houses that were damaged by the rampaging waters of swollen Agusan river, those members of the DRRMCs who would still attend and actively participate in meetings even if work was cancelled due to bad weather, those who attend to the evacuees even if their own families were affected too, those who render 24/7 duty without break at the expense of time with their families. All these in the name of public service. Por la Patria! Para sa bayan! Yet, despite all these efforts, we in the government are still bashed and slanted for inefficiency, corruption, and all negative remarks. I agree there are inefficient and corrupt public officials and employees but they dont compose the entire government institution. They are not the system! And i refuse to heed bashers!….kailangan ko na talaga mag stress debriefing :(... I want my sanity back!
