The past week has been depressing with tragic news and alarming events in Australia and overseas. However, I feel better, optimistic and uplifted after watching a brilliant documentary on SBS this Sunday evening. The world famous Swedish statistical showman, Hans Rosling, presented Dont Panic: The Truth About Population. If you can only spare six minutes, watch from 19:15 to 25:45 where Hans reveals the normal 2:6 ratio, two parents with six children, dropped to 2:2 in the Year 2000 and the age of Peak Child began and the Child population of the World flattened at 2 billion. The segment from 23:15 - 25:45 is particularly impressive, where Hans uses blocks to demonstrate world population at the present 7 billion, increase by 4 billion to 11 billion, where it flattens. With the worlds population at over seven billion and still growing we often look at the future with dread. In this documentary, Hans Rosling presents a different view and paints a vivid picture of a world that has changed in ways we barely understand - mostly for the better. Personally, my initial and primitive prediction about world population was optimistic: a never ending increase in the number of people enabled by incredible technological advances and social progress. Recent years, my prediction turned pessimistic: population increases to plague proportions and like locusts we die in dramatic numbers as we recklessly consume Earths resources turning Earth into the equivalent of Easter island. In the documentary, Hans presents compelling facts and predictions that the world population will flatten at 11 billion and if we change to a sustainable lifestyle, the Earth can support the population. Hans Rosling is legend in the arena of statistics and three-variable time-base graphs. In this documentary, the graphics have been taken up-a-notch to a new level of professionalism and the factual data is interspersed with wonderful human stories. If you want the data, watch the time segments below: 2:10 - 4:10 graph showing World population increase over past 10,000 years 7:30 - 11:50 graph showing babies per woman versus lifespan in Bangladesh and then each country in the World 19:15 - 23:15 graph showing World population will stabilise at 11 billion due to child population stabilising at 2 billion in the Year 2000 and remaining flat into the foreseeable future 23:15 - 25:45 watch Hans use blocks to demonstrate world population grow from the present 7 billion, increase by 4 billion to 11 billion, where it flattens 25:45 - 28:20 graph showing the global pin code where the extra 4 billion people will reside Watch the SBS documentary Dont Panic: The Truth About Population below: sbs.au/ondemand/video/368800835692/Dont-Panic-The-Truth-About-Population
