The people of Pakistan have suffered unaccountable hardships at the hands of the rulers and the governing hierarchy since they achieved contentment of their dream coming true. An independent sovereign Pakistan which would be a heaven on earth for the Muslims of the sub-continent. The people waded through the river of blood and loot and travelled to adore their Motherland. Soon they realized that their dream was false. The story of plight and plunder is massive but realizing what is happening to Pakistan made me sorrowful. Gifted with unsurmountable resources of water for good agriculture, the veiled potential of energy and hydel power and a very wide spread of rivers, the largest concentration in any Country of the world could have made Pakistan the granary of the region. A criminal neglect has aggravated the miseries of the people who are displaced, disrobed and deprived of not only their livelihood but have lost identity of their loved ones buried as the flood waters inundate and even wipe out graveyards. I felt grieved to hear a marooned father begging for burial space for his child lost in flood. Mile and miles of water and no grave for decent burial. This phenomenon of flooding every three or four years has become a ritual for the people at the helm of the affairs and probably a modus operand to gain global aid and sympathy at the miseries of the common people. No serious efforts have been made to contain and subdue losses due to these calamities. Apart from colossal loss of life, property and livestock, I was also perturbed at the sight of submerged mango orchards which have given a new identity to Multan as “The Mango City of Pakistan.”
