The persistence of a narrative that puts the blame on Islam as a religion for the actions of a few extremists is due to the modern worlds exoneration of the human being from having the capacity to choose to do evil and the responsibility for doing so. Islam doesnt make otherwise moderate people extremists. Its people who turn Islam into a vehicle to justify their extremism. The modern world says youre good and everything else around you is bad. Islam says the world is balanced and is in harmony, but you have the capacity to be bad and upset that balance and heres the way towards being good. It begins with you renouncing your zealotry and battling your own extremist tendencies to impose your beliefs and ideals on everyone else. All these young men who are so delusional as to think theyre brave and are fulfilling Gods commands are in fact arrogant ignorant cowards. Theyre arrogant because they assumed themselves to possess some truth that allows them to act as demigods ruling over the lives and destinies of people in this world and the next. Theyre ignorant because they havent got a clue about how the Islamic tradition actually works in practice and they most certainly havent understood the message of the Beloved ﷺ. And theyre cowards because instead of facing the challenges and tribulations of this world with patience and perseverance, they picked a suicidal path but didnt even have the courage to call it suicide and instead hid behind noble Islamic ideals like jihad and martyrdom.
