The person who nearly starved Mystery to death has just been arrested and charged with animal neglect. Old shouldnt mean skinny. Horses needs do change as they age but its important to pay attention to them and modify their diets, exercise, housing, etc. as necessary. If you and your vet have tried everything possible and your horse looks as bad as Mystery did when he arrived, then humanely euthanizing him before winter (at home with a vet - slaughter is not humane euthanasia) would have been the kindest option. Allowing a horse to become emaciated and attributing it to old age is unacceptable .This horse was severely neglected. Had he died in my care, neglect would have been difficult to prove but hes become bright, happy and has gained 80 lbs. in 5 weeks - even at the age of 37. .
