The phone call on 22 March informing us that Hamish had been - TopicsExpress

The phone call on 22 March informing us that Hamish had been admitted to Royal Melbourne Hospital with critical head injuries turned our lives upside down. Win and I caught the first available flight to Melbourne and we were by his bedside later that evening and Nicholas joined us on Tuesday. A six day vigil followed with Hamish’s condition taking a roller coaster ride, but tragically at 7 pm on Friday 28 March, he slipped away from us. Our thanks to the Melbourne group who provided support to us while we were there Since then we have celebrated his short, but very full, life at a service held at Tauranga Boys College in the gymnasium. It is estimated that somewhere between 700 – 800 people attended including friends from overseas. Our thanks go to all everyone who was there to farewell Hamish and provide support for our family, particularly everyone who travelled from outside the Tauranga area to be there.. So many have given so generously and the ‘Give a Little’ effort was an amazing gesture. Our thanks go to everyone who made a contribution and to Max and Emma who initiated this. We are embarrassed receiving this substantial amount of funding but it certainly has been very helpful in meeting the many costs we have encountered in relation to Hamish’s death and his repatriation back to Tauranga. It is hard to believe Hamish will never be back with us. He had touched the lives of so many in his twenty four years of life. The way he was able to draw people together is evidenced by the number of members on this Hamish Recovery Facebook page. I trust this Facebook page will continue as a forum for people to keep alive the spark Hamish created in all our lives. Thank you all for your kind words, actions and support. I trust that if you are ever in the Tauranga area you will call out to visit us in Omokoroa and share some of your memories of Hamish with us. Our special thoughts go out to Amelia and the many close friends Hamish had who will also be sharing the loss that we, as his family, are currently experiencing.
