The phone scammers are still up to no good, folks. This nationwide problem has been going on for months and authorities are still having difficulty bringing these evildoers to justice. Don’t be a victim of fraud. Swindlers are using energy-related ploys to get into the bank accounts of United members, and utility customers across the country. Last week a United member received a telephone call from an alleged representative of the cooperative. The caller informed the member that they had to make a payment or service would be disconnected. The scammer told the member that for the next two months United would not be accepting checks and that the member would need to pay immediately with a credit card to avoid being disconnected. United Cooperative Services asks that any member who receives a suspicious call immediately report it to the cooperative by calling any of the local offices listed on your bill or on our website (united-cs). If anyone claiming to be a United employee calls and asks you for personal information or indicates that your account is subject to disconnect, please hang up and call your local United office directly. To help us provide as much information as possible to local law enforcement, please be ready to provide as much detailed information as possible about the call you received, such as What was the time of call? What was the caller ID (What number did they call from)? What phone number were you contacted at? What information was requested by the caller? Did the caller have information about your account, and if so what information? Did the caller leave a callback number? Was the caller male or female? Or was there any noticeable accent? Did you ask any questions of the caller, and if so what was their answer? In regard to past due accounts, delinquent accounts are subject to disconnection only after repeated attempts have been made to rectify the situation with a United member, including written notification. Members are always advised to contact a United representative in person to discuss any detail regarding their service with the cooperative.
